Joe Barr lands Ultra Cycling World Cup title

Newtoncunningham cyclist Joe Barr

Joe Barr has grabbed the final point he needed in Florida to lift the Ultra Cycling World Cup title.

The Newtoncunningham endurance cyclist delivered 246 miles in 12 hours and earned that last score needed to lift the crown.

The World Cup is an annual competition comprised of two timed events (12 and 24 hours) and two distance events (500 and 1000 miles).

Each racer accumulates points, throughout the season, according to their final position.

Joe had successfully earned points in the opening three events but on October 4 suffered a serious setback when he crashed and sustained a complex fracture of his pelvis.

Needing just one point from the final event, the 12-hour race, Barr had until December 20 to achieve that feat.

And even though he went right to the wire with that date, just ten weeks post fracture, the 64-year-old has achieved his dream.
