It was an all-action afternoon at the Rochester Boxing Club, Derry, on Saturday at the North West Zone Championships with plenty of Donegal interest taking part.
First up in the Boy 1, 37kg, St John’s Matthew McCullagh seen off Dungloe’s Calvin McHugh 5-0. In the Boy 2, 40kg, Star of the Sea’s Marcus Vijoen was also a 5-0 winner in his bout with St Bridget’s Rowan Doherty.
In the Boy 2, 48kg, Oakleaf’s Shea McElerney was a 4-1 winner over Fabian Rawski of Churchlands. Sean McNamee, St John’s then had his hand raised following a narrow 3-2 win over Carndonagh’s Colm Callaghan in the Boy 3, 52 kg.
Elsewhere, in the Boy 3, 62 kg, Sean Hughes, Skerries, had too much for Carn’s Riely Kelly as the referee stopped the contest in round 3.
Moving on, Cahir McMaster, St John’s, lost out 5-0 to Oisin Friel. IGG, in the Boy 1, 27kg. In the Boy 1, 31kg, St John’s Dylan Stokes was also a 5-0 victor over Charlie O’Donnell, St Bridget’s.
In the Boy 1, 35kg, St John’s Charlie Murray had his hand raised in a 4-1 victory over James Doherty of IGG.
Tiernan McGinley, Dunfanaghy, was another 5-0 winner over Tiernan McGill, Dungloe, in the Boy 1, 38.5kg. Darragh McGonigle, St Bridget’s also scored a convincing 5-0 win over Chris McDonagh, St Joseph’s in the Boy 1,40kg.
Pearse McKinney, Letterkenny, was another 5-0 winner against Robbie Henderson in the Boy 1, 54kg. In the Boy 2, 37kg, Curtis McFall took a 4-1 win against Twin Towns’ Nathan Lynch.
Moving onto the Boy 2, 38.5kg, the referee stopped the contest in the second round as Ryan Glackin, St Bridget’s, defeated Sean Power of Twin Towns.
In the Boy 2, 46 kg, the referee also intervened as Tyler McGonigle, St Bridget’s, overcame Emmett Wilson, Springtown.
In the Boy 2, 37 kg, Martin Ward, Oakleaf, was 3-2 winner over Cormac Callaghan, IGG. In the Boy 3, 59kg, Dunfanaghy’s Owen McDonagh was 4-1 winner over Andrew McLaughlin, IGG.
In the final bout of the afternoon, Tiernan Kerr, Churchlands was 5-0 winner over Sionan McCormack, MOneyglass in the Boy 3, 65kg.
The finals will take place back at the Rochester Boxing Club on Tuesday night.
