Katy McCandless (Athletics; 1996)
San Francisco-born and London-based McCandless, whose grandparents both came from Culdaff, had a deep affinity to the Inishowen peninsula and she joined Finn Valley AC in the mid-90s.
In June 1996, McCandless announced her arrival in style, winning the Women’s Mini Marathon in a blistering 32 minutes and 44 seconds - a new course record.
Confirmation of her selection for the Olympic Games arrived when she clocked a PB of 15:28.28 at the Bislett Games in Oslo.
In the heats of the women’s 5,000m in Atlanta, McCandless finished in 15:55.66
