Matthew McCole bowed out of the National Elite Championships
Matthew McCole was on the wrong end of a 3-2 split decision as the Donegal light-middleweight exited the National Elite Championships on Tuesday night.
McCole was edged out by Eugene McKeever in a quarter-final at the National Stadium.
In a re-run of a semi-final from last year, the Illies Golden Gloves southpaw just missed out when the ringside sums were totted.
The 71kgs quarter-final was a close run affair with McKeever, a native of Mullaghbawn fighting out of the Holy Family club in Drogheda, given the passed through to a semi-final clash with Jon McConnell.
Dungloe man McCole, who won an Ulster Elite crown back in January, was deemed to have done enough by two the judges, but the other three brought their hammer down in favour of McKeever, the beaten finalist last year.

McKeever reached last year’s final, but lost out to Dean Walsh, who is set to make his professional debut next month.
The National Elite finals will take place at the National Stadium on Friday night.
