Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given was among hundreds who took part in a community 5k in Crossroads, Killygordon on New Year’s Day in memory of Joe Carlin and Andy Scanlon.

The event, in aid of youth development at five local clubs, saw people from all across the community converge on the east Donegal village.

Andrew (Andy) passed away suddenly aged 56 on December 13, 2020, while Joe Carlin lost his battle with cancer less than a year later, on September 18, 2021, at 54 years of age.

Both men were neighbours, lifelong friends and fierce competitors on the athletics circuit around the county and beyond.

Lifford native Given, capped 134 times by Ireland during a stellar career and now a TV pundit, joined with some family members, including brothers Marcus and Liam and sister Michelle to take part in a fun event to start 2025.

Although the race wasn’t timed officially, there was still a competitive element with Finn Valley AC’s Enda Doherty the first to cross the line. Doherty was ahead of club-mates Gerard Gallagher and John McElhill while Finn Valley AC juvenile athlete Aimee McElchar was the first female to finish at the CAKE Centre after a course that took in the scenic Monellan Wood.

“We want to give everyone the chance to start the New Year afresh with Joe and Andy in mind,” said chief organiser, Declan Carlin.

Youth development at Curragh Athletic, Markievicz Camogie Club, Red Hughs GAA, Setanta and the Three Rivers Badminton Club will benefit from the proceeds.
