Mona McSharry will compete for Ireland at the World Aquatics Championships next month
Mona McSharry has the World Aquatics Championships in her sights after picking up a second-place finish in the Sette Colli International meeting.
The Grange, Co Sligo native, won her heat in the 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:07.05 to qualify second fastest for the A final in Rome this morning, where she then came home in second with 1:06.86.
The event was won by Great Britain’s Angharad Evans in 1:06.33, with Henrietta Fangli of Hungary third in 1:07.25.
The 24-year-old McSharry races out of University of Tennessee in the USA under coach Matt Kredich, and closer to home for Ballyshannon Marlins Swimming Club.

The World Aquatics Championships in Singapore are taking place from July 11 to August 3 where McSharry and Daniel Wiffin will lead a 12-strongSwim Ireland team.
McSharry is a two-time Olympian and won the bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke at the 2024 Summer Olympics, while Wiffen won the gold medal in the men's 800m freestyle and the bronze medal in the men's 1500m freestyle in Paris.
