Rhys Irwin celebrates his superbikes race win
With the last of the summer sun, Team Irwin Racing headed to Donington Park Circuit in the UK for Round 8 of the British Superbikes Supersport Championship.
Friday saw Irwin set the pace in FP1, but a major mechanical issue forced him to miss FP2, leaving him P2 overall heading into qualifying. With the top five championship contenders separated by mere points, there was everything to play for.
An overnight engine change saw Irwin put his Team Gearlink Performance 15 Suzuki on pole for Race 1. With the fastest riders neck-and-neck, Irwin battled from flag to flag, gradually pulling a small gap over championship rival Currie to take a hard-fought victory.

Sunday brought cloudier skies and the risk of showers, and Irwin started Race 2 from 8th on the grid. Against all odds, he surged to 4th by the first lap, battling Kennedy and Stapleford right up to the penultimate lap, when he seized the lead and claimed his second win of the weekend, regaining the championship lead.
A triumphant Rhys beamed from the podium, thanking his team and the supporters who traveled to Donington. “I raced my heart out, especially in that second race. Kennedy and Stapleford definitely didn’t make it easy, and I’m so happy and relieved to take my first double victory in this class.”
Rhys now travels to Assen in the Netherlands in two weeks for Round 9, with both races shown live on TNT.
