Barnhill on a beautiful Spring Sunday morning - the perfect setting for Letterkenny Golf Club’s annual Captains’ Drive-in last weekend.

Golf hats and warm clothing were still required on a chilly morning, but it was lovely to see such a fantastic turn-out of club members, family members and friends who gathered to be with Letterkenny's captains Ian Ireland and Triona Daly, and club president, Liam Wiseman on their big day.

Unfortunately, due to injury, Ian was unable to partake in the drive-in from the first tee - so instead, he sank a putt on the putting green - to ‘putt’ his way into 2022.

Triona’s drive was beautifully struck and guided straight down the middle of the first fairway. Meanwhile Liam, under pressure from the watching gallery, decided to take on the trees on the right and hit a wonderful drive which found safety close to the green and helped him to a birdie.

The drive-in traditionally marks the start of the golfing season at Barnhill, and the course, despite all the recent bad weather, is looking really well, and it hosted a busy time-sheet with players taking part in a special scramble event. There were 27 teams entered ensuring that we’d over 100 players out on the course on Sunday morning. Congratulations to the winning team which included Pauric Daly, Kevin Rafferty, Patricia O”Sullivan and Robert TJ Brown.

Earlier in the day, they’d been treated to a lovely spread of tray-bakes and treats which were organised by lady members. Thanks to them, and also to Noreen and her staff for the beautiful food later in the day.

The day sets the club up nicely for the year ahead. The next big event in the diary is the St. Patrick’s Day competition.

In the meantime, club members are reminded that subscriptions are now due. Members who have paid in full or have signed up to the Direct Debit payment method by March 20 will be eligible to receive Green Fee vouchers, and also be entered to the draw for a Free 2023 Subscription.
