Aisling Mhic Cumhaill who is the first female president at Gweedore Golf Club
Aisling Mhic Cumhaill has become the first female to hold the position of Club President at Gweedore Golf Club in almost a century.
The first lady to hold the office of Club President in 99 years, Aisling is a very experienced golfer.
She was a mere sixth class student in national school when she first began to play golf and is now regarded as one of the top lady golfers at the club having been the recipient of many prizes over the years. She and her father, Micheál McGee, took up the sport together.
Aisling recalls buying her first set of golf clubs with the proceeds from her confirmation. She has a certificate recording her hole in one on the 11th at Woodbrook Golf Club on January 29, 2006.
Aisling said she is delighted to become the first-ever female Club President at the Machaire Gathlán-based club. The well-known and gifted musician said one of her objectives is to promote the Irish language within the club which will be established for one hundred years in 2023. The event is certain to be celebrated.
Ms Mhic Cumhaill said she would also like to support and promote golf among the youth and increase membership at the club which is located by the sea.
Aisling has been active in Galfóige over the years which promotes the Irish language and golf among the youth of the area.
There were great celebrations as the female golfer began the golfing year on March 12 in her new and prestigious role.
The first day of the golfing year began with a Mass of Remembrance for members from the club who have passed away over the years.
The Mass was celebrated by an tAthair Brian Ó Fearraigh. Father Ó Fearraigh later made his way to the first tee and stood alongside the new Club Captain and the Lady Captain, Michael and Kathleen Rodgers and struck a ball.
Michael and Kathleen are the first married couple to hold the position of Club Captain and Lady Captain since club stalwarts Nonnie and Sarah Gallagher, in 1983. Mrs Gallagher was one of the founder members of the ladies club.
Kathleen was the first of the partnership to take to the fairways, playing since 1998. Michael joined the club later. They both said they are looking forward to the rest of the year and will embrace their roles as an honour and a duty.
The couple hope to travel across the country and play many different and various courses and topping the list is the K-Club. Both are grateful for support of all the generous sponsors who make the competition schedule for 2022 very attractive to both members and visitors.
