Sean Carlin, Kevin McBrearty and Danea Herron were inducted into the Donegal Athletics Board’s Hall of Fame on Friday night.

At the annual awards ceremony, hosted in the Bayview Hotel in Killybegs - the first held in person post-pandemic, the legendary trio became the latest inductees.

Former Finn Valley AC athletes Carlin and Herron were honoured alongside ex-South Donegal Harriers kingpin McBrearty.

Carlin missed out on a place at the 1984 Olympic Games, an injury halting his march. Carlin was the Irish decathlon champion in 1981 and his 7,226 points tally was just 74 shy of what would’ve earned a place in Los Angeles. Carlin’s 7,226 remains the Donegal record.

After relocating to Santa Barbara University, Carlin worked under Sam Adams and in May 1982, while competing at the famous Mt SAC competition, the Crossroads man recorded three PBs as he amassed 6,955 points in the decathlon, hitting new marks in the 400m (50.04 seconds), 1500m (4:17) and the shot put (12.63m).

The young Sean Carlin won an Irish junior discus title in 1976 and his world blossomed from there, winning Irish titles in discus, long jump, high jump, pole vault and decathlon and, having joined the ranks of the FCA, winning the prestigious General Mulcahy Trophy three times.
