Planned accommodation an operational necessity for Donegal Golf Resort

Proposed staff accommodation building for Rosapenna Hotel could help Downings housing market says support documents
A planning application has been submitted to Donegal County Council by Rosapenna Hotel (1962) Ltd for the construction of ancillary accommodation for hotel staff at the Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort.
The proposals submitted were for a single-storey detached building to provide ancillary hotel staff accommodation, including eight bedrooms, communal living spaces, and all associated site works.
A rationale was submitted in supporting documents by Michael McBride Architectural Services, on behalf of the hotel group. It was stated: “The proposed accommodation is an operational necessity for the resort.
“Due to an acute, documented deficit in the localised labour force, the hotel is increasingly forced to recruit essential foreign staff to sustain its hospitality and golfing operations. To facilitate their employment, these workers require immediate, adjacent housing.”
Noting how the planned accommodation would help the housing market in Downings, it was argued: “Currently, the lack of specialised commercial staff infrastructure forces the hotel to purchase or rent standard domestic dwellings within the Downings area to house seasonal and full-time staff.
“This practice removes essential, permanent housing stock from a highly constrained local market. The provision of this dedicated staff scheme will completely halt this pattern, freeing existing housing stock back into the open market for permanent local residents and families.”
The rationale concluded: “This application represents a sustainable, balanced, and highly localised solution to a pressing corporate challenge.
“It protects the operational future of a major regional tourism employer while actively safeguarding the local residential housing stock for the permanent population of Downings.”
The Rosapenna Hotel and Golf Resort is a major attraction in Donegal, with Irish Golfer ranking three courses in the Rosapenna resort amongst the top fifty in Ireland. The resort describes itself as the “World’s first true golf resort.”
Donegal County Council has set a decision due date for the submitted planning application for November 5.
