Irish Unity working groups from Derry and Donegal councils are to come together for the first time as their work on reunification intensifies, it has been confirmed.

The first meeting as part of the cooperation and planning will take place on Wednesday. Sinn Féin Councillor Conor Heaney said it was crucial for local government to help inform the conversation on reunification.

“Both Derry Strabane Council and Donegal County Council have established Irish Unity Working groups to take views on constitutional change and scope the impact and changes needed for this region,” Cllr Heaney said. “A referendum on Irish Unity is a key part of the Good Friday Agreement and will be an opportunity for the people of the island of Ireland to agree peacefully and democratically on the constitutional future of the island.

"Local Councils have an important role to play in that process by helping to inform and encourage the debate about our future, which is already well underway in homes across the island.

“In the Derry and Strabane District Council, we have already heard a significant amount of evidence regarding the huge economic and social benefits that a United Ireland will bring. This week’s meeting is part of that ongoing process as we continue to explore the opportunities to reshape our island, our politics and our public services for the better.”

Cllr Heaney has been at the forefront of establishing the first-ever Working Group on Irish Unity within Derry and Strabane District Council.

Sinn Féin is described as the United Ireland Party, asserting that it will unlock the full potential of Ireland and provide the basis on which a stronger and fairer society can be built.
