Councillor Patrick McGowan has been elected the new Cathaoirleach of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District.

The Fianna Fáil representative succeeded the incumbent Cllr Martin Harley in the Chair, and Sinn Féin’s Dakota Nic Mheanman was elected as Leas Cathaoirleach at this morning’s AGM.

Speaking following his election, Cllr McGowan said it is a great honour for him to have been selected to serve as Cathaoirleach.

“Thanks very much to my colleagues for electing me and to Cllr Harley for all his help and assistance throughout the year,” he said.

“A lot more goes on behind the scenes than at meetings. I’d also like to welcome Anne Marie Conlon, who’s taking over from Patsy Lafferty, Director of Housing, MD Services and Capital Projects, who’s retiring after 40 years of loyal service.”

Outgoing Cathaoirleach, Cllr Harley, thanked all members and staff for the courtesy shown to him over the past year.

“The highlight for me over the last year, and over the last few years, was the fact that we finally got the Drumboe footpath opened,” he said. “I go up there a lot and see the community and children from both schools using it. I’ve received great feedback on this project and it’s a huge credit to the local council staff.”
