Planning permission has been granted for a significant new hotel development in Rathmullan.

The proposed development is a 37-bedroom, four-storey boutique hotel at Kerr’s Bay Road in the heart of the village.

The project, which will be built on the footprint of the former Pier Hotel Rathmullan, is being advanced by Rathmullan native Thomas MacCarron.

Welcoming the progress of the project, Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher said: “I commend Thomas MacCarron, with whom I have worked closely on this project, for his strong investment in his native Rathmullan. This development represents a major vote of confidence in Rathmullan and the wider Donegal area.”

He added that the project will deliver tangible economic benefits locally: “The proposed hotel will generate valuable employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases, while also strengthening Rathmullan’s tourism offering. Importantly, it will bring wider economic benefits to the village and the surrounding areas.”

Local councillor Liam Blaney, Fianna Fáil, also welcomed the decision, saying “the development will enhance local amenity and deliver important new job opportunities for Rathmullan and the surrounding area.”

The boutique hotel will comprise 37 bedrooms and include a bar, restaurant, dining area and reception space, all designed to maximise views over Lough Swilly.

Deputy Gallagher said he looks forward to the project progressing through the next stages and to seeing the positive impact it will have on Rathmullan and the wider region.
