Local historian John McCarron will explore the remarkable vessels and maritime stories that have shaped Lough Swilly over the centuries.

History enthusiasts are being invited to discover the remarkable ships that have shaped the story of Lough Swilly during a special illustrated talk as part of this year's Inishowen Heritage Festival.

The event, led by local historian John McCarron, will take place on Thursday, August 20, at 7.30pm in the Saldanha Suite at Fort Dunree.

Through a series of photographs, maps and historical accounts, the presentation will explore some of the notable ships that have sailed, anchored and left their mark on Lough Swilly over the centuries.

From naval vessels to merchant ships and local maritime stories, the talk will examine how the waters of Lough Swilly have played a significant role in shaping the history and heritage of the Inishowen Peninsula.

Organisers say the event will offer a fascinating insight into one of Ireland's most historic loughs and is suitable for anyone with an interest in maritime history or the rich heritage of Inishowen.

The event forms part of Stories in Stones, a programme within Inishowen Heritage Festival 2026, which celebrates the peninsula's rich history through a series of walks, talks and community events.

Bookings for the guided tour can be made at The Ships of the Swilly | Stories in Stones via Eventbrite.
