Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper and RTÉ analyst Shay Given
Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given will be the special guest at the Donegal Sports Star Awards night later this month.
Galway United assistant manager Ollie Horgan - who spent nine years in charge of Finn Harps - officially launched the 2022 Awards this evening, as well as being part of the presentation party for the 1982 winners.
The event itself will take place at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny on Friday, January 27, with it being the first in-person event in three years because of the coronavirus pandemic. The 2020 and 2021 stagings were conducted virtually.
“It’s an honour to be the special guest of the Donegal Sports Star Awards,” Given said on a recorded video at the launch. “I’m looking forward to the night in Letterkenny and congratulations to the committee for putting the event together for so many years now. I was honoured a few years ago myself and I’m looking forward to getting back there on the 27th to see all the sports stars and the job they do is inspiring. I’m sure we will have a great night.
Lifford native Given, who played locally with Lifford Celtic as a schoolboy, earned 134 caps for Ireland between 1996 and 2016 and was on the books of Celtic, Swindon Town, Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Stoke City. Most recently, he worked as a pundit for RTÉ during the World Cup finals.
