Packie Bonner, ex Glasgow Celtic and Ireland international.
Packie Bonner says Glasgow Celtic should look at taking over a League of Ireland club as a feeder option.
The Rosses native - a current FAI board member - made the comments in an interview with the Bhoys’ own Celtic View podcast ahead of their pre-season friendly against Wolves this Saturday at the Avivia Stadium in Dublin.
The Republic of Ireland legend explained that he’s already spoken to Celtic’s majority shareholder Dermot Desmond about exploring the idea, referencing Manchester City’s branched club model as a possible avenue.
Desmond already holds a 25% share interest in Shamrock Rovers while the likes of Fleetwoord Town and Hull City have relationships with both Waterford and Shelbourne.
“I’ve been talking to Dermot Desmond a few times. I mentioned that we should have a club over there,” said Bonner
“We should have a club in the League of Ireland and run the whole thing, and that will be a lovely feeder club.
“Man City do it all over the world. Why can we not do it? I know we’ve got a connection with Shamrock Rovers through what Dermot Desmond’s doing.
“But, buy your own club, that would be fantastic, wouldn’t it? The club is special. It’s special. It’s got that connection with Ireland that’ll never change.”
