By then, Damien Duff's team had already missed a fifth-minute penalty, when Tyreke Wilson shot wide. However, the home side went two in front when Will Jarvis controlled Conor Kearns' clearance to finish in style on 27 minutes.
Two up at the break, Shelbourne saw their lead halved when Graham Burke delivered a fine low ball that Rory Gaffney directed home from close range on 49 minutes.
Shelbourne captain Coyle was denied a second when Leon Pohls dived low to his right and the visiting goalkeeper made another stop from Shane Farrell. The win moves Shelbourne onto four points from two games, following their 1-1 draw against Waterford in their opening fixture.
