Drogheda United’s request for to appeal a straight red card shown to defender and Donegal Town native Jack Keaney following Monday's match against Shamrock Rovers has been dismissed by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).

The incident occurred during the team's 4-0 loss, with Drogheda trailing 3-0 when Keaney received a straight red card from referee Rob Hennessy after the Donegal man tangled with Shamrock Rovers' forward Johnny Kenny.

Despite assertions from Drogheda's manager, Kevin Doherty, that there was no contact between the players and labelling the decision as a refereeing error, the appeal was ultimately unsuccessful.

"An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has rejected Drogheda United’s FC’s appeal for wrongful dismissal following Jack Keaney’s red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity in Drogheda United FC’s SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division fixture versus Shamrock Rovers FC on 29 April 2024,” a statement read.

"In accordance with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Jack Keaney will serve a one-match suspension."
