Keadue Rovers boss Pat Ward insists Letterkenny Rovers are cup favourites

Keadue Rovers are aiming for cup glory at the weekend against Letterkenny Rovers

Keadue Rovers manager Pat Ward is in no doubt that Letterkenny Rovers will go into Sunday’s Brian McCormick Sports Cup final as firm favourites.

Ward guided his side to a 3-0 semi-final win over Cappry Rovers in Ballyare last Sunday.

Brendan McCafferty, Chris Greene and Mark Forker scored the goals for the men from Central Park, who held the upper hand for much of the 90-plus minutes.

Keadue Rovers might well have operated in a league tier below Letterkenny Rovers this term but given the manner in which they went about winning the Temple Domestic Division One title, Ward is under no illusions.

The experienced campaigner - off the back of Letterkenny Rovers’ extra-time 1-0 win over Kildrum Tigers, runner’s up to Fanad United in the race for the Brian McCormick Premier Division title - feels Rovers will also be a serious challenge to Fanaid United’s Premier Division crown next term.

Lee McMonagle scored in the last minute of extra-time for Rovers in their own semi-final win over Kildrum Tigers.

“Watching Letterkenny in the first game they are a very good outfit,” insisted Ward.

“It is going to be a tough challenge for us. We probably went in as favourites today.

“But after watching Letterkenny they will have to be favourites for the final after beating a quality side like Kildrum.”

Nevertheless, Ward is content that his side have made it through to the final after finishing in third place behind Fanad United and Kildrum Tigers in the race for the Brian McCormick Sports Premier Division title.

“I’m glad for the boys, they’ve done so well. In fairness to them, they have put in a great effort and you saw it out there, the football they are playing.

“They like to keep the ball down and they work for each other. We have a small panel of just 15 players and everyone has bought in.

“I have been involved with Keadue for the last four years and everytime we played Cappry they scored first.

“This is the first time in all my  years with Keadue we scored first and   beat Cappry.”
