Success Edogun: 'We don't listen to outside noise in this team'

While the mood has perhaps changed in Finn Park over the last two weeks following Finn Harps' recent results against Cobh Ramblers and Athlone Town, Success Edogun admits that the mindset of his side is still the same as they go in search of a play-off spot

There might only be six games left in the League of Ireland First Division, but Finn Harps are not pushing any panic buttons yet as they look to make it three wins on the bounce when they welcome Longford Town to Finn Park this weekend.

A 2-0 win against Cobh Ramblers two weeks ago gave the hosts a much-needed boost in their own quest for a play-off spot, before following it up with a 4-1 win last Friday against Athlone Town to get the club back into a consistent winning grove, something not seen since earlier this season.

And while the mood surrounding club can often turn on its head after confident wins, Harps man Success Edogun admits that even when the team was at a low point earlier in the summer, they refused to listen to outside voices, and that’s not going to change now.

We don’t listen to outside noise,” Edogun said. “As a squad, we just try to bloke it out. We know what we’re capable of, we know what we can do, and as long as we focus on our own game, we know we can get a result.

We were on a bad run of form over the past few weeks, I think we lost six games in-a-row at one point, but we all know the quality that we have, we showed our quality on many occasions this season, it was just about getting back to playing with confidence.”

A brace apiece from Patrick Ferry and Edogun either side of the interval handed Finn Harps a fine 4-1 win over Athlone Town last weekend marking the first time the club has won consecutive games since the beginning of April.

But the win in Athlone may be a key victory for the Ballybofey side, who could be building some momentum as they close the gap to the play-offs to just four points approaching the final six games of the league campaign.

We’re very happy to be back to winning ways, we have two wins in-a-row and now we just have to keep going, especially with the fact that it’s so tight in the league coming to the end of the season and we need to get as many points as possible to get into the play-off spot,” Edogun said.

For myself, I was very happy to get back into form and get back onto the scoresheet. It’s been a while since I got one, I have nine goals now this season, so I might get a few more hopefully before the season is over.”

For Edogun, he can’t quite put his finger on what has changed the fortunes recently in Finn Park, but he does point to their win over Cobh Ramblers as a crucial game, one that they looked at as one that could define their season, whatever the result could be.

I think the game against Cobh Ramblers, there was a ‘now or never’ type of feeling to it,” he said.

We badly needed a win at that point, and that night the boys were just at Cobh from the start and we got a deserved win. It was like a switch came on and we just all performed, and from that, we followed it up with a win against Athlone, so we just hope to keep that going now.”

Sitting four points behind Bray Wanderers, just outside the play-off spot, Harps hope they can continue their positive run for the rest of the season as they welcome Longford Town to Ballybofey this weekend, but for Edogun and the rest of the squad, they are not looking past this Friday’s match as they go in search of another win.

We’re playing catchup at the minute, so to do that you can’t panic, we just have to take it one game at a time and try and maximise our points in the last six games and see where that takes us,” he said.
