Rashenny Youths 2
Cockhill Colts  6

Played in ideal conditions on Saturday night the Colts held the upper hand for much of the match before running out of steam in the final quarter when the home team posed a greater threat and pulled back two goals.

The visitors could have been in front very early on but the feet of keeper Sam Coyle denied Kevin McDaid when unmarked in front of goal the forward got away a low drive.

When McDaid had a second effort block minutes later the ball was returned into the box and Kieran McLaughlin headed over.

The deadlock was broken mid way through the opening half. Mark Gillespie was brought down and Niall Gordon scored the first of his three goals by dispatching the resultant penalty.

Gordon swept home his second when Gillespie delivered a diagonal ball in from the right and it could have been three when McLaughlin flashed a ball across the front of goal but there were no takers.

At the other end Rasheney threatened when Damien Friel’s free was held by Graham Doherty and then when Friel’s through ball was controlled by Oran McDevitt, the forward drove over from just outside the area with Doherty advancing.

Cockhill scored a further two goals in double quick time in the five minutes before the break.

First Gavin Doherty’s low cross from the left was turned home by Gordon for his hattrick and roles were reversed when Gordon set up Doherty for a low drive across the keeper to the bottom corner.

Early in the second half the home team’s Kyrin Kelly was put through at the edge of the area but a great defensive tackle cleared the danger.

The Colts moved further ahead when following an attack along the left the ball was worked across the 18 to McDaid and when he laid off Gillespie hammered an angled drive to the net and they scored a sixth, when despite appeals for offside, Doherty was allowed to move forward, round Coyle and shoot to an empty net.

Rasheney came more into the game in the final quarter. McDevitt touched the ball over a defender and, from outside the box, unleashed a fierce shot that the Cockhill keeper tipped over.

In the next home attack McDevitt pulled a goal back when, after the ball was worked across the edge of the box, he controlled and hammered to the net and he then got a second with a low ground shot that found the target.

Keeper Doherty denied him a hattrick with a good save shortly after which Rasheney was reduced to ten men following a tackle and subsequent altercation with the match finishing without any further scoring.
