John Young, Finn Harps’ first captain in the League of Ireland, has died.
The Derry native, a goalkeeper, played 33 games for Harps in two seasons at the club.
Young died peacefully at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry at the age of 81 and will be buried following funeral Mass on Saturday at 11am at Sacred Heart Church, Muff.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary and is the father of Hilary, Jackie, Graham, Senga, Christine, Nicky and the late Therese and John. He is also survived by his adoring grandchildren and was the dear brother of Sally, Mary, Catherine and Michael.
Late of Back Shore, Culmore, he was a talented goalkeeper in his youth and won the FAI Junior Cup with Finn Harps in 1968. Previously, he had played for Foyle Rovers and Derry City.

After a brief spell at Distillery, Young returned to Harps in 1969 after the club was accepted into the League of Ireland and he was made the club captain. Young was the captain and goalkeeper for Harps’ first season in the League of Ireland.
He scored a goal against Waterford direct from a goal kick at Kilcohan Park and he moved to Derry City in 1971.
