Amber Barrett of Republic of Ireland in action against Busem Seker of Turkey
Amber Barrett was a second-half substitute as the Republic of Ireland WNT defeated Turkey 1-0 in the Uefa Women's Nations League B.
The Milford native came on 13 minutes into the second half, while Anna Patten started the match and Blackburn Rovers' Tyler Toland from St Johnston was an unused substitute. London-born Patten qualifies for Ireland through her maternal grandparents - Donald Coyle, a native of Falcarragh and Bridie Coyle, nee Conroy, who hailed from Lettermore in Galway. Kyra Carusa looped a header for the only goal three minutes into first-half injury time.
The best early chance came to Denise O'Sullivan whose shot was blocked on the line. With Ireland holding onto a slender lead and enjoying plenty of possession, they were glad to see a 91st minute effort from Kader Hançar go just wide of the right post.
And so a winning start for new Head Coach Carla Ward and Ireland take on Slovenia at the Bonifika Stadium, which is the home stadium of FC Koper, on Tuesday. Slovenia opened their campaign with a 2-1 win away to Greece.
Last week, Barrett scored two as Standard Liège beat Oud-Heverlee Leuven 4-1 in the Belgian Women’s Cup semi-final.
