Galway United player Emma Doherty
Buncrana native Emma Doherty has been named on the Team of the Week for round 1 of the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division following her brace in Galway United’s win on Saturday night.
Galway United are top of the Women's National League following a 5-1 win over DLR Waves.
Despite being 1-0 down at half time, United were creating chances and they levelled in the 55th minute through Aislinn Meaney.

Doherty made it 2-1 four minutes later and from there, United didn't look back with Meaney, Doherty, and Amanda Smith all adding goals at Eamon Deacy Park.
Doherty started out at the likes of Illies Celtic and Buncrana Hearts before she signed for Sligo Rovers in 2022, making her debut in the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division that same year.
She made her debut against DLR Waves at the Showgrounds in March and scored her first goal for the club a week later in a 2-1 win over Cork City.
Doherty had an instant impact at Rovers scoring 11 goals in 26 games that year and winning the SSE/LOI Player of the Month for June/July for her fine form.
Doherty’s efforts also saw her earn a place in the league’s Team of the Year at the time. She kept that form up and played 50 games for Sligo Rovers, scoring just under 30 goals in that time.
She then hooked up with Galway in 2024 and featured in 17 league games in total, for Rovers and United and netted on four occasions that term.
That included scoring in three successive games for United when she was on target against Peamount United, Sligo Rovers, and Treaty United.
“Yeah, I’m really happy with the result. The first half is not what we really wanted but I’m happy with the second half and delighted I got two goals as well,” she said following her side’s win at the weekend.
“I hadn’t had a full pre-season under my belt so I’m happy to have got a full pre-season this year and it’s nice to start off the season with goals and get some momentum under our belts.”
