Catherine Grier nets against England as Ireland reach World Deaf Futsal semis

The Republic of Ireland team celebrate after defeating England

Catherine Grier hit the net for the Republic of Ireland as they defeated England to reach the semi-finals of the World Deaf Futsal Championships.

The Milford woman, who plays for Bonagee United, scored in the 6-3 win over their neighbours in Montesilvano to reach the final four.

Donegal Town native Teagan O'Reilly, who plays for Drumbar United, is also part of the squad, who won well over England thanks to four goals from Laura McGuinn and the other from Natalie O'Brien.

Ireland had gotten off to the worst possible start and were trailing by two goals when McGuinn struck her first on 10 minutes to reduce the deficit. O'Brien levelled matters with six minutes before half time and the pendulum had truly swung in the direction of the Irish.
From the onset of the second half, Ireland pressed their neighbours and were rewarded when two further McGuinn goals in two minutes gave Ireland an unassailable lead.
From then on England pressed to find a way back into the game but were kept at back by the resolute Irish defence and with England throwing caution to the wind, Grier intercepted a pass and broke clear to make the score 5-2 to the girls in green.
England did manage to pull one goal back before McGuinn struck again to break English hearts and ensure a historic 6-3 victory to Ireland.
The semi-final fixture confirmation has yet to be announced, with Ireland scheduled to face Japan or Brazil.
