Upcoming Olympian Brendan Boyce has been included on an elite Irish squad that competes in the Road Race Walk World Cup in Russia next month.

Milford native Boyce will take part in the 20k walk in Saransk on the weekend of May 12 and will take on a multinational field from 67 nations. The Russians are expected to dominate the medals in London this summer so competition will be rife.

Boyce, who competes out of Letterkenny Athletic Club, achieved the Olympic A standard for 50km with a time of 3:57:58 at the German championships in Naumburg in Germany last September. Then, the 25-year-old went onto clock 3:57.33 in late March in Dudince Slovakia, where he finished seventh in a competitive field. Finn Valley Athletics Club’s Patsy Mc Gonagle manages the squad.

Milford Community Games will hold a 5K fun run/walk and a children’s one-mile for Boyce’s Olympic journey tonight at 7.30 pm. Registration in the clubhouse at Moyle Park from 6.15 pm. Spot prizes for runners and walkers, with showers and refreshments in the clubhouse afterwards.
