Letterkenny Athletic club’s Ruairi Finnegan has been eliminated from the 1500m IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championship in Barcelona after finishing 10th in his heat this morning.

Finnegan came home in a time of 3:53:95 in the third of three hearts in Catalonia, which was a disappointing one since he had made the qualifying standard when he clocked a personal best of 3:46:27 in Watford only last month.

Finnegan, who turns 18 on Saturday, saw Teklit Teweldebrhan from Eritrea first home on 3:46:46, just in front of Hillary Creyulyot of Kenya 3:46:54, while Moroccan Abdelhadi Leball came third with 3:46:75. The fastest of the 12 qualifiers was Hamza Driouch from Qatar, who won the second heat in a very impressive time of 3:38:06.
