A Donegal League club have (seriously ...) made an optimistic plea to host Euro 2028 fixtures

Fanad United have a proud footballing history, but, let's be honest, will be doing well to pull this one off

One Donegal League club has jovially offered to host matches at Euro 2028 following the national associations of Republic of Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland confirming their intention to bid to host the tournament.

Fanad United, with their ground at Traigh-a-Loch, is the optimistic hopeful with its scenic views and - whether this be a pro or a con for those who have braved the elements at the venue in the midst of winter - its ability to never, ever suffer a postponement.

The competition is due to take place in the month of June, which fits perfectly outside of the local soccer calendar and Donegal, has, infrequently, even enjoyed sunshine around this time of year.

An  FAI statement, which neglected to mention Fanad it must be noted, reads: "The feasibility study included an analysis of the economic impact, the political football landscape and likely costs of hosting major international tournaments. On balance, the five associations have decided to focus solely on an official bid to host Uefa Euro 2028, and have agreed not to bid for the 2030 Fifa World Cup.

"It would be an honour and a privilege to collectively host Uefa Euro 2028 and to welcome all of Europe. It would also be a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the true impact of hosting a world-class football tournament by driving positive change and leaving a lasting legacy across our communities."

No spokesperson from Fanad United FC, who were managed until 2013 by current Finn Harps manager Ollie Horgan, was contacted for this story as they are possibly busy preparing their bid, but it might brighten up your Monday.

The club made their appeal to the Football Association of Ireland today via Twitter and they, like the rest of us, are keen to see what kind of response they get. As the saying goes, if you're not in, you can't win!
