Fintan Doherty has been named in the Republic of Ireland Under-17 squad for a friendly double-header in Spain this week.

The Letterkenny teenager, who plays for Derry City, has been chosen by Colin O’Brien in a 20-man squad for the games against Belgium.

The former Bonagee United schoolboy has worked his way into the Irish squad in the last year and the St Eunan’s College student was in the Derry City senior panel in recent weeks for pre-season friendlies.

Ireland face Belgium in behind-closed-doors friendlies in Marbella on Thursday (February 10 ) and Saturday (February 12).

The games are in preparation for the Elite Round of the UEFA Under-17 European Championship qualifiers.

Ireland face a tough round of qualifiers where they'll meet Elite Round hosts Portugal (March 23), followed by Finland (March 26) and Bulgaria (March 29).

Fifteen teams will advance from eight groups of the Elite Round phase and will join Israel, who qualified automatically as hosts.
