Tourish says Finn Harps giving away too many soft goals

The former Letterkenny Rovers defender played in the 3-1 loss at the Showgrounds and is hopeful of picking up something on Friday night against Shelbourne

Tourish says Finn Harps giving away too many soft goals

Conor Tourish signed for Finn Harps in the close season

One of a host of new faces at Finn Park this season, Conor Tourish has hit the ground running, despite Harps’ disappointing start to the new campaign.

The Letterkenny man returned to the starting eleven in Sligo on Monday night and put in another solid display on the right side of defence. That said, he was quick to acknowledge that defensively, Harps could and probably should have dealt with the Sligo goals better than they did.

“I thought we started the game well,” Tourish said. “We had a couple of chances at the start of the game. We created a few opportunities but we just couldn’t finish them which seems to have been the story so far this year. We then got caught on the break. We gave the ball away and they broke and scored.

“The three goals they got came from turning us over and catching us on the break. When you are conceding goals like that, it’s not great. They aren’t good goals to be giving away and we really need to improve in that area.”

New Sligo Rovers frontman Aidan Keena hit a brilliant hat-trick as the home side claimed another win over their north west rivals. His third, just after half-time, killed off any hopes Harps might have had of clawing their way back into the contest.

“At half time we thought if we could get the next goal, you just never know what can happen,” Tourish added.
“But it’s another soft goal we gave away. We gave it away too easily and then it’s just one long ball over the top. We can’t be giving away goals like that, it makes it a lot harder for us to get back in the game.

“But we look forward now to Friday against Shelbourne. These are the teams you need to be getting the results against. It’s the last game before the international break. We have a break after that for two weeks so it’s important for us to try and get the first win on the board to try and kick on from there.”
