A new project by Active Travel which could see a new cycleway from Bundoran to Ballyshannon is hoped to encourage people to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

The project could see people both walk and cycle between the two towns.

A public information evening has been held in relation to the project which is now progressing closer to planning stage.

Local Fine Gael Cllr Barry Sweeney says it’s important for both communities to view the plans: “There is public consultation ongoing, online, at the moment, and it has received very positive feedback.

“It will mean a big upgrade of what was a national primary road, the road itself doesn’t have to be as wide as it once was.”

He said that since the bypass was built there is the potential to narrow so that a cycleway can be incorporated.

“It is a good project, it makes a lot of sense and quite a lot of people are walking and cycling that road in more recent times. Once you put something like this in place it will encourage more usage for active travel and a healthier lifestyle,” he said.

The Ballyshannon-based representative said the cycleway would provide a safer environment for locals and tourists to use.

Road signage will be put in place in order to help provide safety for all road users.
