Well known Bundoran businessman, Diarmaid Doherty, has officially declared that he will contest this year's Donegal County Council's local elections in the Donegal Electoral area as an Independent candidate.
A former serving councillor on the old Bundoran Town Council until its abolition, a decade ago, he also contested the last Donegal council elections in 2019.
A native of Bundoran, he attended Ballyshannon Vocational school and served his apprenticeship in Ballyshannon Joinery.
A carpenter by trade, his business interests over the decades have expanded into retail, tourism and hospitality. He stated, that in that time, he has developed a passion for all things community driven.
He has also previously served on various boards including Waterworld and the Policing Board.
Actively involved in local community and enterprise initiatives, he has been chairperson of Bundoran Bord na nÓg and chairperson and manager of the local LGFA club.
A member of Town Teams action group and Discover Bundoran, Diarmaid has also been a mentor to many local business start-ups and community groups, his door is always open for those seeking help or guidance, his moto is, It’s good to talk, but imperative to listen.
Diarmaid is running as a non-party candidate as he feels party politics are not always beneficial to communities at a local level.
He stated, he wants to stand for what is best for constituents, their families and their businesses and not be tied to the party restraints that can distract from those needs.
He believes he can be a strong voice to represent South Donegal on the local council, ensuring funding and investments make their way quickly and efficiently to our towns and villages to improve their infrastructure and community facilities.
