Donegal restaurant nominated for Ireland’s best chowder

Anderson's Boathouse in Killybegs has been nominated for Ireland's best seafood chowder

A Killybegs restaurant has a debut nomination for the Souperb awards for the best chowder in Ireland.

Anderson’s Boathouse in Killybegs has been nominated for the best chowder in Ireland as part of the Souperb Awards hosted by Cully and Sully in conjunction with John and Sally McKenna of the McKenna guides.

This is the first time this particular competition has run. They are one of seven finalists and the only finalist from Donegal and Ulster.

Three finalists were chosen by public vote and the other four finalists were chosen by Cully and Sully and John and Sally McKenna. Anderson’s Boathouse was chosen by the judges.

Anderson’s Boathouse holds the title for Ireland’s best chowder which they won as part of All Ireland Chowder Cook Off in Kinsale which was sponsored by Clona and Cork Gas. This award was last held pre covid in 2019.

“It’s a big honour when you look at the spread of places around the country to get people to travel out as far as Donegal and I think that was even an achievement in itself,” said Garry Anderson owner and chef of Anderson’s Boathouse.

This isn’t the first time the McKenna’s have been to Killybegs. The couple had previously eaten in the Seafood Shack but this was their first time in the restaurant.

Cully and Sully as well as the McKennas are currently travelling around the country trying the chowder in each of the finalists. While they are there, they film the restaurant and the chowder experience and have a short interview with the owners.

The filming has already taken place in Killybegs.  A winner is due to be announced at the end of the week.
