This is a proud weekend for the Naomh Conaill club in Glenties as they host the Donegal finals of Comórtas Peile for the first time.
Ardara, Dungloe, Milford and the hosts, the reigning Donegal and All-Ireland champions, are the teams competing for the senior title and the right to represent the county at this year’s All-Ireland final.
Downings, the defending Donegal champions, Na Rossa, Naomh Muire and Naomh Conaill are the teams in the running for the Donegal Junior title.
In ladies football, Termon and Glenfin, the outgoing champions, meet in the senior final once more. Naomh Muire and Fanad Gaels are contesting the Donegal junior ladies final while Ardara and St Nauls will go toe to toe in the ladies Intermediate final.
The Comortas weekend opens on Friday night and all the football action is on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.
Danny McGeehan is the Naomh Conaill chairman and he and his committee have this week been putting the final touches to preparations for their big weekend.
“This is our first time to host the county final and we are really honoured to have been given the opportunity to host the competition,” said the chairman.
“We have a long association with the Comórtas Peile Na Gaeltachta dating back to the very early years. I remember myself and Jimmy McKelvey going to meetings in Gaoth Dobhair in the early 1970s.”
The weekend kicks off on Friday night with a Ceili Mór in the Community Centre, with music by Ceili Time. The Ceili gets underway at 9 pm .
The football throws in on Sunday with an action-packed programme of six games made up of two ladies finals and four semi-finals in the men’s competition.
The ladies final meetings of Naomh Muire and Gaeil Fhanada in the junior final and Ard an Ratha and St. Nauls in the Intermediate are being played at the St Columba’s Comprehensive School grounds on Sunday afternoon.
At the same time in the club grounds, Davy Brennan Memorial Park, the first of the senior semi-finals and the second of the junior semi-finals will be played.
The senior ladies, boys U-15 and the junior and senior mens finals are on Monday.
Sunday night has a busy programme of activities with a trath na gceist in the Community Centre and the Cailín Gaelach will be selected at a dance in the Highland’s Hotel.
