Friel double helps Cockhill to cup glory

Garbhan Friel scored twice as Cockhill Celtic defeated Letterkenny Rovers in last night's Donegal News League Cup final at Dry Arch Park.

It means the Inishowen club have completed a fantastic treble success. They'd already won the Ulster Senior League and Knockalla Cup titles before Sunday.

Yesterday's victory was built on a super first half display during which Friel struck twice in seven deadly minutes.

His first arrived on 28 minutes. The former Harps striker ran onto a Ciaran McLaughlin ball over the top and after holding off the challenge of Paul Boyle, shot past Rory Kelly.

Rovers could have drawn level soon after when Paul McVeigh controlled Rory Kelly's kick-out on his chest, but after running through, he shot wide of the target.

However, in an almost carbon copy of the first goal, Cockhill extended their lead on 35. Again Friel was sent clear, this time by Malachy McDermott, and after getting the better of his man, found the net with another clinical finish.

Steve Okakpu and Christy Connaghan also had chances for Letterkenny, but despite those opportunities, they failed to force Cockhill keeper, Gavin Cullen into a single save.

The second half offered little or nothing in the way of chances.

Kill the tie

Cockhill did have one decent opportunity to kill the tie off when Malachy McDermott's effort was saved by Kelly.

Rovers, however, appeared tired after all their recent cup exertions and never really looked like finding a way back. Former Finn Harps manager Anthony Gorman came on as a late substitute for them.

In the end, Cockhill were deserving winners, rounding off a magnificent season with another impressive win.
