Triple Donegal success at National Basketball annual Awards

Donegal was well represented in the Basketball Ireland awards when over 40 awards will be presented at a special ceremony at the National Basketball Arena.

Among the winners were two schools - Colaiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon and Abbey VS, Donegal Town, as well as an individual award for Donegal town's Dillon Muldoon.

Muldoon, a 4th year Health Promotion student at Sligo IT, was named the Division 3 Male Collegiate Player of the Year.

Presenting the award Martin Conroy – Chair of the National Colleges Committee said: “Dillon helped his college team to the Division 3 title this year and was MVP in the National League Final. He was the top scorer in Div.3 and showed his class all year long”

Muldoon had a very successful 2015/16 basketball season, picking up an All-Ireland medal with IT Sligo, as well as top scorer and the MVP Award in the final. Dillon’s club team Donegal Town Nets BC, where he is captain, finished second in the Shannonside Area League and won the Top Four trophy.

This latest award reflects Dillon’s dedication to his team and the sport over the season.

Head Coach at IT Sligo Brian McHugh cited Dillon’s work rate, awareness and technical ability on the court as some of the reasons for his and the college’s success this year. Coach McHugh explained “last year Dillon was scoring big numbers for the college team, actually he was top scorer in all Divisions of the league, and was our main threat, but this season his game has matured and while he is still getting significant baskets it’s his ability to create scoring opportunities for his teammates that has been the real highlight of his game”.

It is satisfying to see a player from the Donegal Town area and north-west region receiving this ‘player’ award, which is recognition, from Basketball Ireland, of the coaching efforts at club, school and college level. Well done to Dillon and all concerned.

Also congratulations to Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town who were named Girls 'C' School of the year, and Coláiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon on receiving the Girls 'B' School of the Year Award.

Both schools won All-Ireland titles in their respective grades earlier this year - on the same day, which was a great occasion for schools' basketball in the county.
