Donegal RFC Youth Section held their annual awards in Pier 1 on Friday the 24th of June. This was a well-attended affair with over 80 players and parents in attendance on the night.
Gary Prendiville, under 18’s Coach, welcomed everyone and gave a brief summary of the season. Thanking everyone for contributing to the various fundraisers during the season which will help the club to employ a Community Rugby Officer next season to go in to the local schools in September to promote the game of rugby and help the club to row. The Ulster Branch will also be assisting and supporting the CRO.
Awards were presented as follows:
U-16s - Captain’s Award went to Charlie Boyle. Most Improved Player went to Sean Campbell and Player of the Year went to Victor Joe Mitchell.
U14 - Captain’s Award went to Corey Byrne this year’s top try scorer. Most Improved Player went to Michael Herron; Player of the Year Michael Roarty.
U-18s - Captain’s Award went to Alex Boyd. Most Improved Player Anthony O’Neill. Player of the Year Jack Sweeney.
The U18 team were heading for a league final in January but were decimated with injuries and had to pull out. They re-grouped and had a good run in the cup once their players recovered culminating in an Ulster Carpets Shield win over a fancied City of Derry side. History was made as this is the first U18 Shield the club had ever won. Michael Hannifin presented medals to the U18 Team.
Robert Morrow Youth Convener made a special presentation to Edward Moss who represented the club at Ulster Squad Level this past season.
The Most Valued Underage Contribution Award was presented by Paul Timoney to Robert Morrow in recognition of his hard work and dedication as Youth Convenor for the past decade. Robert retired last year from Donegal Golf Club where he was a valued member of the Greenkeeping staff. This year he intends stepping down as Youth Convenor but no doubt he will continue to work away quietly in the back ground. Thanks for your efforts Robert.
In conclusion Gary thanked Pier 1 for the wonderful food and wished everybody a good summer and hoped to see all back at training on Wednesday the 24th of August.
