All the news from Donegal's fairways

It was open week in Dunfanaghy and the Captains Days continued right around Donegal's golf courses last week.

Here's a round up of all that's been happening.

It's not too often that the Society produces a back-to-back winner, but after his excellent victory at Barnhill last month Enda McMenamin did just that with a clear-cut win on his home course at Ballybofey & Stranorlar Golf Club last Friday.

In near perfect conditions Enda shot a super 2 over gross score of 39 Stableford points to win by three points. John James Mc Bride took the Runners-Up spot, just pipping Charlie Collins as both recorded 36 points, with another B&S man Pauric Mc Hugh in 4th place on 35pts bot.

RESULTS: Section One: John Doherty 35pts bot, Kevin Mc Donald 35pts, Shane Blake 34pts. Section Two: Cynthia Furey 34pts bot, Michael Boucher-Hayes 34pts, Noel Duggan. Section Three: Ken Sharpe 30pts, Charlie Mc Hugh 29pts, Conal Mac aBhaird 29pts. 1st Nine: Kyle Maloney 18pts. 2nd Nine: John O Friel 18pts. The Society's next outing will be at Dunfanaghy Golf Club on Thursday, 18th August.

Letterkenny Ladies

There was a great turnout for the McFadden's gift shop sponsored competition on Tuesday. July 19th.

On probably the hottest day of the golfing year thus far, one of our very talented young players Mary Beth McBrearty (31) was the winner with a super 38pts. Given the challenging temperatures it was great scoring. Congratulations to all the winners.

The 'North West Breast Care Unit' competition generously sponsored annually by the Silver Tassie was played on Friday. It was open to both ladies and gents. It was as usual very well supported by the club members. Ladies who featured in the prizes were, the longest drive Celine Bradley, nearest the pin Marian O Sullivan. The main prizes went to the gentlemen. Well done to all.

One of the highlights of the year for Captain Jackie Ireland was the annual ladies outing. This year the venue was the Ballymascanlon Hotel in Co Louth. A superb choice which was endorsed by the over 30 ladies who travelled. A big thank you to Captain Jackie and her wonderful Vice Captain Mary Fowley for organizing this perfect venue, from both a golfing and entertaining aspect.

In very pleasant conditions with a tee time of 11am on a new course to all, the ladies set forth. After a super meal the results of the day were declared. The only two recorded was by Patricia O Sullivan, nearest the pin was Angela Killgallen, front nine Shelia King 19pts and back nine Sandra Mc Monagle 20pts. Well, what a great weekend! Despite the rain (at times), the course was immaculate, the standard of golf was very high and the Captain and all his family treated us to a terrific couple of days. The man of the moment was Val Quinn who started out on Sunday 5 shots behind the leaders from Saturday with 69, but backed that up with a super 62 for a 131 total to win by a shot from Johndy Boyle. Darren Gallagher, who was second last year, was third with a 133 total while Daniel Timoney shot through the field on Sunday with a super 63 for a 134 total and fourth place. Congratulations to Daniel who also had a Hole in One on Sunday at the 15th, I believe it was with a soft 9 iron.

As Donal watched from the Clubhouse the prize he so often collects was up for grabs and Derek Bonner was the man to grab it, taking gross with a 149 total. The 36 holes is a great test and everyone loves the excitement and buzz of the board and making the cut, so well done to all that made it through to Sunday and in particular to all our prize winners.

After an excellent speech, there was a poignant moment when Donal asked everyone to be upstanding and raise a glass for Michael Sharkey and Dinny Sweeney. He then made a number of special presentations to his daughter Elisha and to three special guests, Martin Mc Dermot, John Sweeney and Enda Kennedy. Surprisingly there was no secret hole this year!

Next weekend we have another big competition with the Michael Murphy Sports on Sunday.

2nd Kaye Stewart 35 pts bot, 3rd Deirdre Kelly 35 pts., 1st Nine Margaret McConnell, 2nd Nine Eileen Reily

Congrats to the Maire O'Donnell team who had the narrowest of victories over Rosapenna in the 2nd leg at home. Having won just 1 match away and 9 holes down it wasn't looking good for the B & S team. On the 2nd leg with 3 wins and 2 halves it was all down to the wire in the last match. The 9 holes had been taken care of but the last match had to win, they were all square on the 18th and Ann Glancy had a 6 ft put to win the match and she sunk the putt. The B & S team won by just one hole. The team were Margaret McConnell & Eileen Boyce, Dolores Devaney & Stephanie Canning, Mary McHugh & Deirdre Duncan, Bridie Faulkner & Margaret Hynes, Ann Glancy & Josephine Stewart.

Meanwhile the North West League had a fantastic win against Redcastle winning 4.5 matches to score 9 points. The team were Mary P. O'Flanagan, Mary Brogan, Kathleen Porter, Elaine Patton & Rose McElhinney. This was Rose's first match and she won on the 18th. Team Capt. Mary McHugh.

Next Friday is day one of Lady Captain's Day, Day 2 on Sunday. Names should all be down by Wednesday. There will be a 9 hole and 5 hole competition for beginners. Draw to take place on Friday at 6.30.

Meanwhile beginners 9 hole and 5 hole competitions take place every Wednesday.
