Mark English has finished in third place in his 800 metres heat in Rio and will compete in the semi-finals on Sunday.
The Donegal man was the first Irish athlete in action today, in the heats of the 800m, as the track and field competition got underway.
Mark was drawn in the sixth of seven heats and with only the top three sure of making the semi-finals, it was a tough ask but English came through in third place with a time of 1:46.40., slightly outside his season best of 1:45.36.
Although still only 23, English has built up considerable experience, winning the bronze medal at the 2014 European Championships in Zurich, and upgrading that to silver at the 2015 European Indoors in Prague.
Sunday will see new challenges but Donegal and Ireland will be behind the UCD man all the way.
