Could Sligo Rovers still have a part to play in battle to avoid the drop?

For the second season in a row, Sligo Rovers might well have a big part to play in deciding what Premier Division team contests this season’s promotion/relegation play-offs.

The Bit o’ Red host Wexford Youths in their final match of the season at The Showgrounds on Friday week, October 28th.

On the same night, Finn Harps play their final league game against Bohemians in Finn Park.

There is still every chance that Harps might need Sligo to do them a favour, depending on how Wexford’s results go between now and that final weekend.

Should Wexford defeat Harps this Friday night, the gap between the two clubs would be down to just three points. Wexford’s game in hand is away to Cork City next Monday night, and if they were to take anything from that game, the gap would be reduced again.

Even if Wexford were to lose in Cork, they might go to Sligo knowing that mathematically, they could still avoid finishing in the bottom two.

Going into the final weekend of the season in 2015, Sligo Rovers played host to a Limerick FC team who needed to win and hope that Drogheda United lost at Shamrock Rovers, in order to escape automatic relegation.

In a night of high drama, Limerick won 3-2 in Sligo while Drogheda lost 5-3 at Shamrock Rovers. It meant of course that Drogheda went down, and Limerick met Finn Harps in the promotion/relegation play-off final.
