It will go down as a disappointing result for Finn Harps, who are slipping away from contention, after dropping two points to bottom side Athlone.
Finn Harps dominated possession in the opening half but just couldn't make the breakthrough. They forced corner after corner and Aidan Friel hit a crossbar as it remained scoreless at the break.
Harps were again the more forceful in the second half but they were rocked by a Shane Stokes goal on 55 minutes.
Thereafter, it was again Harps who pressed with Paddy McCourt denied by a post. BJ Banda, on as a substitute, also hit a post before finally Harps got back on terms on 78 minutes through Michael O'Connor.
Harps piled on the pressure in the remaining minutes but were unable to breach the Athlone Town defence for a winning goal.
