MILFORD
With the death of Gene McGinley Milford GAA lost one of it’s founder members and a lifelong supporter of all things GAA in the locality.
From his arrival as a teacher in Milford Vocational School in the 1960s Gene was instrumental in the growth and development of Gaelic Games in the Milford, Fanad and Rosguill areas. In the early years he was involved with Mulroy Gaels and introduced many to Gaelic for the first time as manager of various underage teams. Later, in the 70s, with the revitalisation of Mulroy Gaels under the new name of Roger Casements he continued his involvement in managerial and administrative roles. In 1983 he was a founder member of the Milford GAA Club following the decision of Fanad and Downings to form their own clubs.
Gene continued to play an active role in the club for many years and helped lay the foundations for what has now become a Senior club in the county, an ambition he held from his first arrival in Milford. He always said he looked forward to the day when Milford would entertain his native Gaoth Dobhair at senior level in Milford.
Indeed, the strength of the GAA in the locality with three strong clubs, Milford, Fanad Gaels and Downings, each with fine facilities, is a tribute to men like Gene who laboured hard against the odds for many years to lay strong roots for Gaelic games. Those early years when he ferried players to all parts in his green Volkswagen laid the cornerstones for the future.
Gene was also heavily involved with Gaelic football in the Vocational system at school and county level. Despite small numbers he always produced teams at all age levels in school competitions with considerable success. At county level he would have been involved as a selector for County Vocational teams and always endeavoured to make sure that Milford Vocational players were included.
Gene will be missed by the GAA fraternity in the area but more so by his family. To Mary, Brendan, Eimear, Orla and the extended family, the club extends its condolences.

Bhí slua mór bailithe in Óstán an ‘Downings Bay’ oíche Luain áit a raibh an tarraingt don chranchur a bhí a reáchtáil ag an chumann le tamall measartha. Ba mhaith leis an chumann comhghairdeas a dhéanamh leis na buaiteoirí uilig agus ba mhaith leo fosta a mbuíochas a chur in iúl d’achan duine a cheannaigh ticéad sa chranchur agus bhí cuid mhór acu sin ann, thar 4,000 ar fad. Rinne coiste an chranchuir an-chuid oibre lena chinntiú go raibh dea-thoradh leis. B’é Anton Mac Eiteagáin an ball is sinne sa chumann agus iarpheileadóir de chuid an chumainn a tharraing an ticéad don duais mhór, sin an €25,000. B’é Adrian Logan an pearsa teilifíse a bhí mar fhear a’ tí agus bhí iarchaptaen Thír Eoghain, Fergal Logan ansin le súil a choinneáil ar rudaí lena chinntiú gur reáchtáileadh achan rud mar ba cheart. Comhghairdeas leo sin uilig, idir fhir is mhná, a d’oibrigh go dícheallach le cúpla mí.
De thairbhe go raibh an tarraingt ann oíche Luain cuireadh an lotto siar go dtí oíche Chéadaoin. Déanfar an tarraingt don lotto oíche Chéadaoin ag an Bhingo.
Chuir an fhoireann sinsir tús maith leis an tsraith sna Dúnaibh ar an Sathairn nuair a bhí buaidh mhór acu in éadán Phaiteaga. Sílim go mbeidh dúshláin níos mó rompu amach anseo.
