Moville got off to a winning start in their Junior A championship with a comfortable 10-point victory over Naomh Padraig in Lifford on Saturday night.
Naomh Padraig 0-7
Midfielder Malachy McDermott and wing forward Ciaran Diver kicked five points each for the winners in a tie in which Moville scored all but one of their points from play and had eight different scorers on the night.
This was, by and large, the big difference between the sides as Naomh Padraig relied on the boot of full-forward Gary McGirr for the bulk of their scores.
McGirr posted five his team’s tally with midfielder Micheal Ferry and corner back Micheal McBrearty posting Naomh Padraig’s other two points.
Moville dominated in the possession stakes but this tie was even enough on the scoreboard until the final quarter when the Inishowen men pulled away as the Naomh Padraig challenge wilted.
Lifford, thanks in no small way to a tenacious defence, where Michael McNulty, Michael McBrearty, Patrick McNamee and Damien Tourish were outstanding, were in front at half-time, 0-5 to 0-4.
Gary McGirr and Enda Murphy and Micheal Ferry and Joshua Lafferty traded points in a low scoring first quarter.
And while Jack Keys went forward from wing back to edge Moville in front, two late points from McGirr, one from play - a super strike from 40 metres and the other from a 30 metre placed ball, responded for Naomh Padraig.
The home side enjoyed a good start to the second period and courtesy of a McGirr close in free and a brilliant point on the run from Michael Brearty, the black and ambers extended their lead out to two points, 0-6 to 0-4 by the 36th minute.
But with McDermott and John McGeady taking control around midfield, Moville, with a slight breeze in their backs, slowly cranked up a gear. By the 39th minute, courtesy of points from Ciaran Diver and McDermott, they had drawn level.
The roving play maker Nigel McMonagle quickly had the Inishowmen in front and with Diver - who turned in a big performance at wing forward - John McGeady, McDermott (2) all pointing, the winners had opened up a five point margin before McGirr, scored Naomh Padraig’s final point six minutes from the end.
With the game up, Moville closed out the match with six late points from Diver (2), Lafferty, McDermott (2) and McMonagle to cruise to victory.
