Letterkenny rower Sinead Jennings is heading to Rio and next summer’s Olympic Games after securing qualification over the weekend at the World Rowing Championship.
Jennings and her partner Claire Lambe finished third in the Light-Weight Skulls B final on Saturday in France.
The third place finish was enough to secure the Irish pair a place at the Rio Olympics. Jennings and Lambe went into Saturday morning’s B final needing a top place finish to book their spot on the Irish team flight to Rio, next August.
Jennings and Lambe have only been together for three months and in that time they have really gelled into a formidable doubles partnership.
“I have really enjoyed the last three months since we teamed up first,” Jennings told Highland Radio Sunday Sport.
“We have really worked well together and the real bonus is that we have now qualified for Rio, next summer,” added Jennings who recently moved from Limerick to live in Cork. The Games will be 39 year-old’s chance to add to a gold medal in the Single Light-Weight Sculls at the 2001 World Championships. She also won silver at the 2008 World Championships, in Linz, Austria and bronze at the World Championships, in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2000.
She only returned to rowing late last year after receiving an invitation from new Irish Rowing Coach, Don McLachlan, and is now set to join the ranks of Donegal Olympians.
