Drawn All-Ireland final causes fixtures headache in Donegal

Replay of Kerry v Dublin will clash with championship games

Drawn All-Ireland final causes fixtures headache in Donegal

Donegal GAA officials have been left with a fixtures headache following Sunday’s drawn All-Ireland Senior final meeting of Dublin and Kerry.
The All-Ireland final replay has been fixed for Saturday week, September 14, back in Croke Park which is the source of the headache for the officials of the Donegal Competitions Control Committee.
And with a throw-in time of 6pm, the replay clashes with a number of second round group games in the Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Club Championship.
In all, 18 club championship games (at senior, intermediate, junior and reserve level) have been fixed for the evening of Saturday, September 14, including the meetings in the Senior Championship of St Michaels and Gaoth Dobhair in Dunfanaghy, Dungloe and Naomh Conaill in Rosses Park, and Milford and Glenfin in Moyle View Park.
“The games are going ahead,” said Donegal vice-chairman Frankie Doherty, the chairman of the Donegal Competitions Control Committee.

“It is very unfortunate but the games have to go ahead. We have no other choice because the calendar is so tight.
“If we put them back it will put us under pressure to meet the Ulster Championship deadlines. The Ulster Council are not going to put them back a week.

Two weeks
“We have currently allowed for two weeks between the county senior final and the first round in the Ulster Senior Club so if we put the games back a week, the knock-on effect is the two week gap will be reduced to one.
“Saturday afternoon is not a great time for a game in Donegal but we are going to have to bring them forward to say 2 and 4pm.
“If clubs are unhappy with that we don’t mind if they want to go for a late time and clash with the All-Ireland. We have no problem with that. Friday night is not on because none of the clubs in question have floodlights.
“The bottom line is the games have to go ahead on the day.”
Among the other games effected are the clash of Aodh Ruadh and St Nauls in Fr Tierney Park, and Naomh Colmcille and Burt, in the Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Intermediate Championship.
Naomh Padraig, Lifford versus Carndonagh, in the Junior A Championship and the meeting of Naomh Padraig, Muff and Robert Emmetts are also fixed for Saturday evening week.
The Donegal club championship gets underway this weekend with a full round of games in the senior, intermediate and junior championship to be played over Saturday evening and Sunday.
