Fintra National School is inviting people to attend a community event and take a trip down memory lane before it closes its doors for the final time.

After a significant drop in enrolment in recent years with only four pupils currently in the school, and little response to a campaign to save the school, the tough decision was made to close. The sad news was confirmed in April, and relevant parties were informed.

Fintra National School opened its doors 185 years ago. Now in its last few weeks of operation, an afternoon of nostalgia and shared memories is being held, and everyone is welcome to come along.

Fintra National School Board of Management issued a statement saying: “Having contacted Bishop Niall Coll, the School Patron, regarding the closure of the school, the Bishop subsequently contacted the Department of Education and Youth seeking the permanent closure of the school at the end of the current academic year (August 2026).

“In order to implement the closure of the school, the Department has furnished the Patron and the Board of Management with a school closure checklist, which is being implemented.

“The school gym will be open on Thursday, June 11 from 1pm to 3pm, where there will be a display of school roll books, photographs, and school memorabilia.

“Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome to attend.”
