Donegal County Council has urged the public to take all necessary precautions
Met Éireann has issued Orange weather warnings for parts of the northwest, with authorities advising people in affected areas to restrict travel to essential journeys only and to shelter in place where possible. While essential services will continue to operate, their activities will be guided by prevailing local conditions and advice from forecasters.
For those who must travel, drivers are being asked to take extra care and remain alert to pedestrians and cyclists who may be at greater risk in stormy conditions. Winds associated with Storm Amy are expected to be severe, with destructive and damaging gusts likely to bring down trees and power lines. The public are warned to be vigilant to these dangers and avoid areas where fallen debris is present.
Coastal areas are also expected to be impacted, with the Irish Coast Guard appealing to the public to stay away from the shoreline and to “Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry.” High seas could lead to wave overtopping and tidal flooding in low-lying and exposed Atlantic areas, while heavy downpours may result in localised surface flooding which could persist into Saturday.
Residents are being asked to prepare for possible power outages by ensuring mobile phones are fully charged and to monitor the latest Met Éireann forecasts through its website, app, and social media platforms. ESB Networks has highlighted the dangers of fallen live wires and is urging people to stay away from them, advising the public to report incidents immediately on 1800 372 999. Updates on power restoration can be checked at www.PowerCheck.ie.
Uisce Éireann customers can stay informed about water supply issues by visiting the company’s website and social media channels or by contacting its 24/7 customer care centre on 1800 278 278. People are also encouraged to sign up to the utility’s free text alert system for local updates.
Donegal County Council has reiterated that safety is the priority as Storm Amy tracks across the northwest and is calling on the public to remain vigilant, take advice from official channels, and avoid unnecessary risks during the period of severe weather.
