Creeslough
Donegal County Council is working with property developer Charles Roarty to provide eleven social housing units in Creeslough. The move is part of the council’s overall response to support the community of Creeslough following the devastating explosion in October, 2022.
Following the tragedy a housing need was identified and work got underway in the Glenties Municipal District.
Planning permission and Irish Water approval have since been obtained for the proposed Creeslough development. Approval from the Department of Housing has also been sought and obtained via the single stage approval process.
Housing Capital is now working with the developer to obtain and review detailed drawings and specifications of the proposal. The proposal remains subject to contract.
Independent Councillor Michael McClafferty said: "These houses when they get to construction is going to be a huge help around the Creeslough area and surrounding area. There is a big need for houses in the community.
"There will be another small addition of houses, three houses coming on stream there, in a different area. Now, that has to go through the normal process and it will be discussed at Monday's plenary meeting in Lifford. It is council owned land so we are hoping that there will be no issues there. Providing all goes well - that will be fourteen units for Creeslough."
Meanwhile, Donegal County Council is planning to develop further projects on existing landbank in various locations throughout the county. Preliminary designs are underway for a number of these sites and are informed by the pertaining approved social housing need at local level, Area Manager Michael Rowsome said at a recent meeting of Glenties Municipal District.

In addition to the current expression of interest advertisement on the councils’ website for parcels of land, derelict sites, buildings with the potential to deliver social housing.
The council is also separately identifying parcels of land with social housing potential in areas of need. A number of suitable parcels of land have been identified across the Glenties MD and negotiations are ongoing directly with landowners and agents, to acquire these lands. The council has already made 3 offers which are under consideration by the respective landowners.
