A protest against the sale of Israeli goods took place in Lidl, An Clochan Liath (Dungloe), this afternoon.

Protesters, in solidarity with Palestine, gathered at the premises to show customers their dissatisfaction and displaced Israeli goods from the shelves.

Over 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israeli troops, in response to an attack by Hamas on October 7.  In its January decision, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to take steps to prevent any acts of genocide in Gaza, but to little avail.

“We had a protest today at the Lidl Store, An Clochan Liath, because they are selling goods made in Israel,” Independent Councillor Micheál Mac Giolla Easbuig said. “We informed them that we were not accepting this. We explained to the public the reason for our position and they supported and agreed with us. No big business should support the Israeli genocide and oocupation. Direct action is needed and we would encourage others to do the same.”

Mac Giolla Easbuig successfully campaigned last summer that the Palestine flag should be flown at the Public Services Centre in An Clochan Liath.

Rachel Ní Gallachóir, from Loch an Iúir, who was also part of the protest, added: "It was great to be a part of today's demonstration in solidarity with Palestine. By raising awareness and taking action, we, as consumers can make a choice and influence change.

"We hope that by raising awareness, consumers will make ethical choices to support Palestine and stop Israeli companies from profiting from their crimes. While stores like Lidl may not remove these products straight away from their shelves we as a collective can affect corporate decision-making if we stand strong in boycotting these products!"
